Strange thing about lawyers, they’ve been around for an awfully long time. The Romans perfected the idea of an advocate, the mouthpiece arguing for justice. They were members of the upper class, the rock stars of their time, with fans who would flock like pigeons in a modern day Italian piazza to hear patricians debate in the tribunals from dawn to the 4th hour. They were the politicians of their day. No wonder their civilization collapsed.

Seriously, the Romans started a trend. Instead of defending yourself have someone else do it. Someone who knew the law. Someone respected by the community. Someone who, at least, seemed like they could be trusted. And it went down hill from there. Our present day guardians of justice still take on cases for political advantage. Just look at how many of them are holding us up. I mean, how many of them are holding office. And just look at how many of them there are. We’re overrun with lawyers and we have to keep their population down to a manageable number, just like rats.

Not that I’m comparing lawyers to rats. That wouldn’t be fair to the rats. But if you look at how many rats there are, and the fact that no matter what you do to get rid of them, more of them show up and want to join you for dinner, you can see why rats and lawyers are similar. Rats probably do some good in the scheme of things. Same with lawyers, though maybe not as much. There are times you need a lawyer. Hard to think of those times you may need a rat. Both serve a purpose in nature. Both are scavengers. And with both, you have to stop feeding them to cut down on their population. With rats, cover your trash. With lawyers, get them to stop filing frivolous suits. Pass tort reform in the legislature. Of course, like any infestation, rats or lawyers, you’ll find them fighting to keep their food source. That’s why you need to get the rats out of your garbage and lawyers out of the state houses. Otherwise you’ll find yourself overrun with both.
